Tracking climate change with science and design.
Tracking climate change with science and design.
An affordable and user-friendly tool.
Sofar Ocean developed the Spotter Buoy as a citizen-sensor to distribute ocean sensing and democratise data access. For the first time, scientists worldwide have an affordable way to understand waves in remote regions and study their impact on weather and climate.
The design team was asked to design a buoy while fully acknowledging the critical constraints presented by a scientific instrument. By exploring alternative manufacturing technology, we were able to develop an iconic object that sets the product apart from other sensors visually and structurally. Today, the Spotter Buoy is a cost-effective solution that allows Sofar Ocean to maintain and operate the world’s largest privately-owned marine weather sensor network.
